A.W. Tillinghast

The Philadelphia aristocrat who built Winged Foot, Baltusrol, Bethpage Black and San Francisco Golf Club in the 1920s. Tillinghast’s holes are muscular and clear: deep flanking bunkers, pear-shaped greens, and a routing that varies direction and demand hole by hole. The restorations of the last decade have put the scale back.
