How it works

How Pocket Looper Works

A good looper does five things before you hit: reads the lie, reads the wind, works out how far the shot really plays, hands you the right club, and remembers how the hole went. Pocket Looper does all five, from your phone, on the course you are standing on.

01

Vision engine

AI Lie Reader

Show it the ball and it reads the lie — then changes the number, the club and the shot to match.

How it works

  1. Take a photo of your ball

Just as it sits, from about where you will stand to hit it. No photo handy? Pick the lie from a list instead.

  2. It reads the lie

The vision engine works out which of 14 lies you are in, how deep the ball sits — how much of it is showing above the grass — which way the grass is growing, and whether the ground is wet.

  3. It measures the slope

Lay your phone flat on the ground by the ball, top toward the target. The motion sensors read the tilt: uphill, downhill, ball above or below your feet — and how that changes the loft, the distance and the aim.

  4. It changes the shot to match

Carry, roll, aim and a setup tip, from one table built on launch-monitor data, so the same lie always gives the same answer. When a lie is too risky for a full swing, it tells you to play out.

What it reads

  • Lie depth
  • Flier lies
  • Half and fully buried
  • Divots
  • Bare ground and hardpan
  • Pine straw and leaves
  • Fairway and greenside sand
  • Plugged “fried egg” lies
  • Grain direction
  • Wet ground
  • Uphill and downhill
  • Ball above or below feet
Example

Ball sitting up in the rough, 150 to the flag

LieRough, sitting up — a flier
Ball showingAbout 90%
CarryAbout 6% further (+9 yds)
RollAbout 10 yds more
AimStraight at it

“Flier: little spin, it won’t stop. Land it short of the flag.”

02

Wind engine

Live Wind Vector & Compass

Wind is only useful once you know which way you are facing. The caddie reads both, live.

How it works

  1. Live wind, where you are standing

Speed, gusts and direction for your spot on the course — so you also see what the shot plays if it gusts.

  2. Point your phone at the flag

The compass reads your heading and corrects it from magnetic to true north. On a phone without a compass, drag the arrow on the dial instead.

  3. The wind is split in two

The part blowing along your line (headwind or tailwind) and the part blowing across it (crosswind). Wind in your face costs more than wind at your back gives, and the maths allows for it.

  4. You get yards, not arrows

How many yards the wind adds or takes away, how many clubs that is, and how far left or right to aim.

What goes into it

  • Live wind speed
  • Gusts
  • Wind direction
  • Your compass heading
  • Headwind / tailwind
  • Crosswind drift
  • Your club’s ball flight
Example

150 yards, 12 mph wind coming from 30° right of your line

Into you10 mph (headwind)
Across6 mph, from the right
Plays like162 yds (+12)
ClubOne club more
Aim8 yds right of the flag

The same 12 mph straight into you makes it play 165; straight behind you, 143. Wind in your face costs more than wind at your back gives.

Air engine

Environmental Plays-Like Distance

The yardage on the sprinkler head is how far the flag is. Plays-like is how far you actually have to hit it today.

How it works

  1. It reads the air where you are

Elevation of the course, and the live temperature, humidity and barometric pressure.

  2. It works out one thing: air density

All four change the shot the same way — through how thick the air is. The caddie works out the density once, rather than stacking “per 1,000 feet” and “per 10 degrees” rules that count the same air twice.

  3. It adds the wind

The wind from the compass read goes on top — and thin air takes some of the sting out of the wind, too.

  4. One number

The plays-like yardage: the distance to hit it, with how much came from the air and how much from the wind.

What goes into it

  • Elevation
  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Barometric pressure
  • Wind along your line
Example

The same 150 yards, three different days

Mile high, 85°F, dry141
Thin, warm air — plays 9 yards shorter
Sea level, 50°F, damp153
Cold, heavy air — plays 3 yards longer
…and 10 mph into you167
+3 from the air, +14 from the wind

Your bag

Your Custom Club Matrix

Not a generic chart. Your own distances, adjusted to today, and the club to hit.

How it works

  1. Put your carries in once

In Your bag, enter how far each club carries for you. Until you do, the caddie uses typical low-handicap distances.

  2. Every club, re-worked for today

Each club’s carry is adjusted for today’s air and the wind on this shot — a long iron and a wedge are not moved by the same amount.

  3. It picks the club

The shortest club that still gets there, with where to aim when the wind or the slope will move it.

What it uses

  • Your carry for each club
  • Plays-like yardage
  • Wind on this shot
  • Your lie and slope
Example

150 to the flag on a cold, damp morning, 10 mph into you

ClubYour carryToday
6 ironHit this172155
7 iron160144
8 iron148133
9 iron136119

On a still, warm day this shot is your 8 iron. Today it is the 6 — two clubs more, and the caddie tells you which one.

Your rounds

Hole-by-Hole Tactical Journal

Every hole written down as you play it, so the stats tell you where the shots really go.

How it works

  1. Score each hole as you go

Strokes and putts; greens in regulation are worked out for you from those two.

  2. Note where it went

Fairway hit, missed left or missed right — and trouble counted in shots, not yes-or-no: water, out of bounds, fairway bunkers, greenside bunkers.

  3. Leave yourself a caddie note

What the wind did, the line that worked, what to do differently next time.

  4. See the patterns

Your Scores turn it into the stats that matter. Logged a round as just a total? Add the hole scores later.

What you log on each hole

  • Score
  • Putts
  • Fairway: hit, left, right
  • Water
  • Out of bounds
  • Fairway bunker
  • Greenside bunker
  • Notes
Example
12Par 4 · 412 yds5 +1
Putts2
FairwayMissed right
Green in regulationNo
TroubleGreenside bunker × 1

“Wind off the left all day — start it at the left edge.”

Over a season, that becomes

  • Fairways hit
  • Greens in regulation
  • Putts per round
  • Scrambling
  • Sand saves
  • Penalty shots

Tournament rounds

The Rules of Golf (Rule 4.3) don’t allow club and aim advice in a competition. Switch a round to Tournament in its ••• menu and the caddie keeps to what is allowed — the forecast — for that round.

Private by default

Your rounds are yours, and the people you played them with. Nothing you score is posted anywhere unless you share it.

What it costs

Keeping score is free and always will be. The caddie becomes part of Pocket Looper Pro when the app launches; until then, all of it is free to use.
