A painter who designed only nine courses before his early death, every one of them unforgettable: Tobacco Road, Caledonia, True Blue, Tot Hill Farm, the Monterey Peninsula Shore. Strantz drew holes by hand on site, hid greens behind dunes and built bunkers like sculpture. Divisive, theatrical and much loved.
